Google goes black | Google goes green

My friend Colin sent me this, I found it very interesting.

Google's Energy Conservation Efforts
When your screen is white - an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when it’s black it consumes only 59 watts.

Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views this site sustains. According to his calculations, 750 mega watts an hour per year would be saved – the amount of energy required to power 75 homes for a year.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called 'Blackle', with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption. Check it out at www.blackle.com - end -

Cool idea. I recall when everything was dark background and light lettering.

When I was writing software for 12-15 hours a day I would always invert the screen since it was simply easier on my eyes for long periods of time.

Just an FYI, Google didn't create the site themselves it's a custom search made by a third party rather than an officially endorsed Google project.

Would be cool to actually approach Google and get one of those funky custom areas created, much like http://www.google.com/mac

I also found this very interesting. Its a very solid idea for a good cause. I don't use Blackle myself because I use Greenback Search (http://www.greenbacksearch.com/), which I think is so much better and is also powered by Google. They use eco-friendly colors for their site but what I most like about it is that they use a big part of their revenue from their searches to purchase carbon offsets.
